Techniques for Tasting Wine

Our staff is passionate about our wine selections and can help you figure out what flavors you like best. Here are a few tips on how to get the full aromas and flavors out of your tasting experience:

1. Look at the edges of the wine. Tilt your glass a bit to see the way the color changes around the edges of the wine, making a note of the color and clarity. White wine becomes darker as it is aged, and reds tend to lose their color as they age, turning almost brown.

2. Swirl the wine in your glass. Swirling increases the surface area, allowing the scent to escape and reach your nose with more strength. Swirling also allows oxygen to get into the wine, which helps it open up.

3. Note the viscosity while you are swirling. More viscous wines are likely to be more alcoholic (which is also known as having "legs"). A higher viscosity is thought to indicate a more full-bodied wine.

4. Sniff the wine. Initially start off with the glass a few inches from your nose, then move closer. Note the aromas.

5. Take a sip. Roll the wine around in your mouth, exposing all sections of your taste buds to its flavors. Pay attention to texture and weight.

6. Before swallowing, aspirate through the wine. As if you are about to whistle, purse your lips and breathe in while your sip of wine is still in your mouth. Aspiration allows you to enjoy the taste and the scent at the same time.

7. Note the aftertaste. Think about how long it lasts, how it finishes, and whether or not you like the taste.

Increasing your wine vocabulary will help you pinpoint tones, notes, and other characteristics of the wine. Consider these terms for tasting:

  • Acidity
  • Toasty
  • Creamy
  • Velvety
  • Complex
  • Earthy
  • Juicy
  • Steely
  • Flamboyant
  • Oaked
  • Charcoal
  • Bright
  • Buttery
  • Crisp
  • Silky
